Research

I am interested in understanding how climate shifts and variability influence the dynamics of surface processes and affect landscape evolution over various timescales. Bookhagen and Strecker (2012) demonstrated the sensitivity of landscape denudation rates to precipitation along the steep slopes of the eastern margin of the Andean Plateau. Sedimentary archives located in intermontane basins in NW Argentina (fill terraces, paleo lake sediments and landslide deposits) give the opportunity to investigate paleo erosion rates and processes during the late Pleistocene. By combining these data with paleoclimate and paleovegetation proxies, I hope to achieve a multi-temporal perspective on how landscapes respond to climate shift and changes in climate variability.

 

Methods

Cosmogenic radio nuclides (10Be) to determine modern and paleo denudation rates as well as dating the abandonment of terrace surfaces.

Radiocarbon analysis (14C) to date mass wasting processes (landslide, debris flows,…)

Lipid biomarkers (n-alkanes) for paleovegetation and paleohydrology reconstructions.

Remote sensing analysis
