Research

I am a palaeolimnologist using lake sediments as environmental and climate archives. I mainly work on late glacial and Holocene records from Central Asia including western China, Mongolia and Tajikistan. In addition, early and middle Pleistocene lake sediments from Israel, Jordan and China are investigated. Shells of micro-crustaceans (ostracods) provide information on lake parameters such as salinity, water depth and presence of macrophytes; and stable oxygen and carbon isotopes and trace element ratios of ostracod shells serve as additional proxies of environmental change. Sedimentological (grain size, magnetic properties) and geochemical (total organic carbon, carbonate content, stable isotopes of carbonate and organic matter) characteristics of lake sediments are further used for assessing multi-proxy records.

I am very interested in ostracod ecology and sampled many water bodies in China, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Israel and Jordan to learn more about the ecological preferences of species for applications of Quaternary ostracods as indicator taxa, and to establish transfer functions for quantitative palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.

Ongoing projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG):

(1) Microfossils as indicators of aquatic ecosystem evolution and monsoon dynamics

This project has the aim to improve the potential of ostracods and other microfossils from the Tibetan Plateau as indicators of environmental change in the Quaternary. Surface sediment samples and water samples from lakes, ponds, springs and streams on the Tibetan Plateau are sampled together with Antje Schwalb (Technical University Braunschweig) and Peter Frenzel (University of Jena). Lake sediment cores covering the Holocene are drilled and investigated to track the moisture history of the Tibetan Plateau and the interaction of the westerlies and the Indian and East Asian monsoon systems.

(2) Understanding Quaternary variations in water availability in the Near East as a key for future
projections of regional environmental change

Quaternary lake sediments in Israel show that the region experienced dramatic changes in moisture availability in the past. The amplitude and rapidity of climatic changes and the environmental response in different catchment areas is investigated to provide basic information about possible consequences of future climate change in the region which is already severely suffering from limited water resources. Two sub-projects in cooperation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Tell Hai College have the aim to assess the environmental conditions during times of hominin migration out of Africa.

(3) Late Pleistocene and Holocene climate change in the most continental part of Central Asia

This project has the aim to use lake sediment cores from Lake Karakul in the Pamirs as late Pleistocene and Holocene climate archive from an arid region which mainly receives precipitation as snow from the westerlies and the remants of the Indian monsoon. Lake Karakul is a large and deep closed-basin lake surrounded by glaciated mountain ranges. Precipitation in the region is low (~70 mm per year) and the lake's response to climatic changes regarded as mainly a reflection of temperature changes. The lake has a shallow eastern (~20 m) and a deep western basin (>200 m) and an island with another small lake. Thus, cores from different sub-basins and the island lake provide records on different time-scales and different response (e.g., fluvial vs. aeolian influx).

Teaching

I was teaching courses in micropalaeontology, Quaternary climate change, palaeoecology and introductory seminars in palaeontology at the Freie Universität Berlin. I am regularly teaching a short course on ecological and geochemical analyses of ostracods. This course was most recently held at the Freie Universität Berlin and at Lanzhou University (China). I am currently involved in teaching of a palaeoecology seminar at the University of Potsdam.

Research

I am a palaeolimnologist using lake sediments as environmental and climate archives. I mainly work on late glacial and Holocene records from Central Asia including western China, Mongolia and Tajikistan. In addition, early and middle Pleistocene lake sediments from Israel, Jordan and China are investigated. Shells of micro-crustaceans (ostracods) provide information on lake parameters such as salinity, water depth and presence of macrophytes; and stable oxygen and carbon isotopes and trace element ratios of ostracod shells serve as additional proxies of environmental change. Sedimentological (grain size, magnetic properties) and geochemical (total organic carbon, carbonate content, stable isotopes of carbonate and organic matter) characteristics of lake sediments are further used for assessing multi-proxy records.

I am very interested in ostracod ecology and sampled many water bodies in China, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Israel and Jordan to learn more about the ecological preferences of species for applications of Quaternary ostracods as indicator taxa, and to establish transfer functions for quantitative palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.

Ongoing projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG):

(1) Microfossils as indicators of aquatic ecosystem evolution and monsoon dynamics

This project has the aim to improve the potential of ostracods and other microfossils from the Tibetan Plateau as indicators of environmental change in the Quaternary. Surface sediment samples and water samples from lakes, ponds, springs and streams on the Tibetan Plateau are sampled together with Antje Schwalb (Technical University Braunschweig) and Peter Frenzel (University of Jena). Lake sediment cores covering the Holocene are drilled and investigated to track the moisture history of the Tibetan Plateau and the interaction of the westerlies and the Indian and East Asian monsoon systems.

(2) Understanding Quaternary variations in water availability in the Near East as a key for future
projections of regional environmental change

Quaternary lake sediments in Israel show that the region experienced dramatic changes in moisture availability in the past. The amplitude and rapidity of climatic changes and the environmental response in different catchment areas is investigated to provide basic information about possible consequences of future climate change in the region which is already severely suffering from limited water resources. Two sub-projects in cooperation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Tell Hai College have the aim to assess the environmental conditions during times of hominin migration out of Africa.

(3) Late Pleistocene and Holocene climate change in the most continental part of Central Asia

This project has the aim to use lake sediment cores from Lake Karakul in the Pamirs as late Pleistocene and Holocene climate archive from an arid region which mainly receives precipitation as snow from the westerlies and the remants of the Indian monsoon. Lake Karakul is a large and deep closed-basin lake surrounded by glaciated mountain ranges. Precipitation in the region is low (~70 mm per year) and the lake's response to climatic changes regarded as mainly a reflection of temperature changes. The lake has a shallow eastern (~20 m) and a deep western basin (>200 m) and an island with another small lake. Thus, cores from different sub-basins and the island lake provide records on different time-scales and different response (e.g., fluvial vs. aeolian influx).

Teaching

I was teaching courses in micropalaeontology, Quaternary climate change, palaeoecology and introductory seminars in palaeontology at the Freie Universität Berlin. I am regularly teaching a short course on ecological and geochemical analyses of ostracods. This course was most recently held at the Freie Universität Berlin and at Lanzhou University (China). I am currently involved in teaching of a palaeoecology seminar at the University of Potsdam.
