9 - 11 October, 2012 | Southwest Pacific Ocean IODP Workshop | Sydney, Australia

Rationale - The rationale of this workshop is to address global geoscience problems in the Southwest Pacific Ocean, by building on existing and new geophysical and geological information including earlier scientific drilling, to come up with coherent and well-integrated IODP proposals. This means a continuation of geophysical, geological, geochemical/petrological, paleoclimate, paleoceanographic, biostratigraphic, and geohazard studies (earthquakes, tsunamis, slumps), with more coordination of upcoming and proposed regional research cruises. It also means planning for extremophile microbiological studies in the sediment column and in oceanic crust as components of geoscience expeditions or as stand-alone expeditions.

Aim - Our aim is to build compelling IODP proposals addressing themes covered in the New Science Plan using existing and new data, to be ready when drilling vessels are again in or near the region from 2015 onwards. This requires a renewed focus on this region over a number of years. IODP drilling is the final and often essential last stage in large scale geoscience experiments, many of which are essentially remotely sensed (seismic imaging, seismology, satellite and other marine geophysical profiling), and often involving dredging, piston coring and water sampling.

We also aim to explore the possibilities of using JOIDES Resolution and Chikyu in a co-funding mode, to address scientific and resource-oriented expeditions of particular national interest.

Themes - The proposed themes are largely those in the new IODP Science Plan for 2012-20123:

1) Climate and Ocean Change: reading the past, informing the future This is designed to cover questions related to climate and paleoceanographic change in this complex region, on all time scales. Sub-committee co-chairs Tim Naish (NZ) and Jim Kennett (USA).

2) Biosphere Frontiers: deep life, biodiversity, and environmental forcing of ecosystems Pioneering studies in the latest phase of IODP. There is almost nothing known about the deep biosphere in the region, so pioneering studies of both sediments and basalts should lead to exciting results. Sub-committee co-chairs Steven D’Hondt (USA) and Ken Takai (Japan).

3) Earth Connections: deep processes and their impact on Earth's surface environment. The links between surface lithosphere and deep earth processes are of great interest in this tectonically complex region. Sub-committee co-chairs Richard Arculus (Australia) and Mike Gurnis (USA).

4) Earth in Motion: processes and hazards on human time scales This tectonically active region has its share of earthquakes, tsunamis and submarine slides that have impacted on populations and will continue to do so. Targeted scientific drilling will help address some of these hazards. Sub-committee co-chairs Laura Wallace (UTIG, USA) and Jim Mori (Japan).

5) Marine Resources: opportunities and responsibilities. What contribution can IODP make to the exploration, characterisation and responsible exploitation of marine resources in the Southwest Pacific region? These resources may include offshore oil and gas, gas hydrates, offshore minerals, wave and tidal energy, bioprospecting, fisheries, and ecosystem services. Sub-committee co-chairs Alex Malahoff (NZ) and Clinton Foster (Australia).

ICDP Workshop Oman Drilling Project | 13 - 17 September 2012 | IBM Dolce Center in Palisades, New York | First circular

Hello everyone,

I am pleased to announce that an ICDP-sponsored workshop on scientific drilling in the Samail ophiolite, in the Sultanate of Oman, will be held at the IBM Dolce Center in Palisades, New York, starting on the evening of Thursday, September 13, and ending on the morning of Monday, September 17.

Diamond drilling and coring, plus downhole logging and experiments, will be planned to address scientific objectives related to (from low temperature to high temperature)

ongoing weathering: serpentinization, carbonate formation, oxidation
ongoing deformation: volume change, fracture processes
hydrology in fractured, altered ophiolite lithologies
sub-surface biosphere in peridotite and mafic lithologies
abiotic hydrocarbon synthesis during water-rock reaction
hydrothermal alteration during ophiolite genesis and emplacement
cooling history of crust and shallow mantle at submarine spreading ridges
processes of igneous accretion of oceanic crust at spreading ridges
nature of key boundaries: dike/gabbro and crust/mantle transition zones
pattern of high temperature deformation in the lower crust and upper mantle
nature and evolution of the bulk composition of the crust and shallow mantle

For more information the workshop proposal and the report from the 2011 Mineral Carbonation Workshop in Oman are both available at

http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/gpg/projects/icdp-workshop-oman-drilling-project

The workshop proposal outlined a preliminary plan for two phases of drilling, with approximately four holes in a first phase, and - contingent on successful completion of phase one - approximately ten more holes in a second phase. The preliminary plan involved the use of wireline diamond drilling equipment and personnel currently active in mineral exploration in Oman, with relatively low costs and with depth per hole limited to about 600 meters. Very preliminary drill sites were chosen in the southern ophiolite massifs, thought by many workers to have a simpler history and structure compared to the northern massifs.

ALL of these topics will be open for discussion by participants, and could be significantly revised as an outcome of the workshop.

The workshop will be limited to 60 participants. If you are interested in attending, please complete the application form at

http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/gpg/projects/icdp-workshop-oman-drilling-project

Applications will be reviewed and participants chosen beginning in late April and continuing until the venue is full. Email announcements with more details will follow, and conference information will be posted at the website above. A steering committee consisting of Ali Al Rajhi (OM), Margot Godard (FR), Benoit Ildefonse (FR), Jürgen Koepke (GE), Chris MacLeod (UK), Craig Manning (US), Katsu Michibayashi (JP), Sobhi Nasir (OM), Everett Shock (US), Eiichi Takazawa (JP) and Damon Teagle (UK) will help in selecting participants and choosing keynote speakers.

This workshop is sponsored and funded in part by the International Continental Drilling Program (ICDP). Support from ICDP will be used to reduce the meeting cost for everyone, to ensure broad international representation, and to enable early career scientists to participate.

We are arranging relatively low cost, group transportation from New York airports to the Conference Center. We do not yet know how much financial support we will be able to offer. There are some indications from both European and US agencies that support may be limited. We hope that as many participants as possible will provide their own funds for travel and conference fees, and will support attendance by younger colleagues.

Workshop costs (meeting facilities and three meals a day, Friday through Sunday) will be about $200 per person. Lodging at the Conference Center is recommended, and is available for $129 per person per night (single rooms only). A limited amount of less expensive lodging is available in the area, but reservations and transportation arrangements for off-site lodging will be the responsibility of individual participants.

Please direct questions to Karen Benedetto <karenb@ldeo.columbia.edu>.

We hope to see you there.

Best wishes,

Peter Kelemen

Advances in development of lake chronologies

Conveners: Charlotte Bryant (NERC Radiocarbon Facility, SUERC, UK) and Darren Mark (NERC Argon Isotope Facility, SUERC, UK)

Chronologies are fundamental to interpreting the timing and rates of past environmental changes. Ongoing developments in analytical techniques and modelling of data have improved the accuracy and precision of chronologies and widened the range of lake derived materials which can be used for dating or comparison to other palaeoenvironmental records. These include: improvements in analytical equipment and methodologies for 14C, Ar/Ar, 32Si, 210Pb, U-series, OSL and ephrochronology dating techniques; Bayesian modelling techniques for14C data and continuing efforts to improve 14C calibration using terrestrial based records. Despite these improvements, there are still challenges to obtaining reliable chronologies and future directions in developments of interest to the palaeolimnological community will be driven by future research priorities which will determine sampling areas and availability of material types.
