Research interests

I have a strong interest in reconstructing paleoenvironmental changes on the basis of marine and lacustrine sediments.

At present, I am focusing on a marine sediment core taken from the SE Pacific (ODP Site 1232), as well as on lacustrine sediment cores taken from two coastal lakes in South-Central Chile. I am combining multiple methodologies (e.g. AMS 14C dating, stable-isotope analysis, X-ray fluorescence) in order to study temporal changes in the regional climate and to derive information about local tectonics.

My second field of interest is the Southern Ocean with its capability of driving global (paleo-) climate. I am especially interested in the oceans’ biological carbon-transport processes (biological pump) as it is of major importance for our understanding of the global carbon cycle and possible future trends in climate.
